FOIA Response from DOJ’s National Security Division and DOD’s U.S. Strategic Command about Michael Flynn’s Relationship with Turkey
According to reports, while acting as a member of the Trump Administration transition team and then as the National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn was responsible for delaying military operations against ISIS to retake the city of Raqqa, Iraq. At the same time, he was being paid to represent the interests of the government of Turkey, which opposed the military plan because it involved cooperation with Syrian Kurdish forces.
On May 31, 2017, Protect Democracy sent FOIA requests to the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, seeking records related to Flynn, Turkey, and military operations against ISIS. So far, we have received responsive documents from U.S. Strategic Command, U.S. Cyber Command, and the DOJ National Security Division (NSD). Those documents are below, and include a November 30, 2016 letter from DOJ NSD to Flynn advising him of his obligation to register as an agent of a foreign government under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
